Hi, Gay! Meg Stalter is on Broadway in Oh, Mary! beginning July 6
Hacks favorite Meg Stalter has taken over the title role in Cole Escola’s Tony-winning comedy at the Lyceum Theatre, succeeding Maya Rudolph as the madcap, cabaret-obsessed Mary Todd Lincoln through September 12. Barrett Foa and Ryo Kamibayashi join the company, and Stalter says she’s never seen herself in a character the way she sees herself in Mary — calling the gig the prize of a lifetime.

Trans people are fleeing red states for Seattle. The city can’t keep up.
Since the 2024 election, a single Seattle nonprofit has helped roughly 1,500 transgender people relocate to the city — more than twenty times the number it assisted before the election — as trans Americans flee states with restrictive anti-LGBTQ+ laws. The influx has strained community organizations providing housing, healthcare navigation, and legal support, prompting calls for the city to declare a civil emergency to unlock additional resources.

Gay man in viral DC Metro photo was ‘terrified’ surrounded by masked white nationalists
Roswell Encina, the gay Filipino American president and CEO of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, says he was terrified when his Metro train filled with hundreds of masked Patriot Front members marching through Washington on the Fourth of July — a moment captured in a widely shared Getty Images photograph. Encina, who came to the U.S. as an infant, said the timing gave the encounter particular weight, writing that he couldn’t help but think about the promise of America and the work still required to protect it.

America’s rich are going to be ‘younger, more female — and more openly queer,’ says UBS
As the Great Wealth Transfer moves an estimated $80 trillion to younger generations over the next two decades, UBS economist Paul Donovan predicts the new face of wealth will be younger, more female, and more openly queer — noting that about 20 percent of the inheriting generation is either openly queer or has openly queer children. The shift carries real implications for investing, from the need for greater liquidity given ongoing workplace discrimination to estate planning in countries that don’t recognize same-sex marriages or parental rights.

Elton John and husband David Furnish lose High Court privacy case against Daily Mail
Elton John, David Furnish, Prince Harry, and four other claimants have lost their High Court case against the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, with the judge ruling in a 436-page judgment that their unlawful information-gathering allegations could not rest on suspicion alone. John and Furnish had alleged the papers published details about the birth of their son via surrogacy — including his birth certificate — before the couple had even received a copy.

NCAA president says trans athlete rules will stay the same after Supreme Court decision
NCAA president Charlie Baker says the organization does not expect to change its transgender athlete policy following the Supreme Court’s ruling allowing states to bar trans girls and women from female school sports, noting the NCAA’s current standard was adopted in response to a 2025 Trump executive order. Baker, who has told Congress he knew of only about 10 trans athletes among more than 500,000 NCAA student-athletes, said he doesn’t believe many member schools object to the existing rules.

Todd Stephens’ 2001 directorial debut Gypsy 83 — a Stevie Nicks-soaked road movie about a gay goth Ohio teen and his best friend chasing their dreams to New York’s Night of 1,000 Stevies — is getting a second life as Gypsy 83: The Director’s Cut, a 4K restoration with 40 minutes of never-before-seen footage. Deemed too gay for mainstream distributors and not gay enough for niche ones in its day, the film opens at NYC’s Quad Cinema August 14 and LA’s Nuart August 21, with Stephens calling it the version he always dreamed of.
